1. What are the characteristics of Toyota’s operation ? Examine the effects theses characteristics have on Toyota’s production system. Toyota designs its manufacturing system and techniques to meet the ultimate goal of producing cars that meets customers diverse preference with flawless quality. Which needs production to be at affordable prices combined with perfect timing. Toyota discovered that the previous targets would be achieved by eliminating waste. The guiding principles to facilitate waste elimination were: 1- Just In time Production: Produce what was needed, only how much was need and only when it was needed. 2- Jidoka: Make production problems instantly self- evident and stop producing whenever problems were detected. For these to principles to work properly that productions system had to be standardized, very well understood by the employees and a continous capacity building , training and problem solving techniques had to be developed. The production System of Toyota relies heavily on the human factor, and how well they can address the probles and react accordingly in the shortest possible time. This led to the development of the third principle of Toyota’s production system which is the “ Kaizen: Change for the better. Another unique way of manufacturing is the heijunka practice, which calls for balancing the total order in the daily production sequence. The reason for that is to stretch its production period over a longer time span to relieve the suppliers and to ensure that there would be no bottle necks in producing any car line or model. 2.
