INTRODUCTION The essay discusses the major problems and growth prospects of Zambia’s tourism industry. The essay will highlight the challenges and the suggest how to implement various items to rapidly improve tourism industry in Zambia. An Encarta dictionary (2009) defines tourism as the process of travelling for pleasure or the activity of travelling for pleasure. In addition, tourism is the business that caters for tourists by providing world class hotels, site, safari etc. The travelling is intended to benefit from a particular service or activity that is unavailable at home. The business of tourism is growing so rapidly that it is now the world’s largest industry. In 1990, 400 million people travelled the world. By 2000, the number was expected to rise to 650 million (Giddens, 2001). Endowed with one of the continents last unspoiled wilderness environments, Zambia’s potential as a unique and authentically African tourist destination has few parallels. The tourism sector is one of the largest foreign exchange earners in the medium term. A stable political backdrop, mild climate, fascinating and varied natural resources, adventures tourism prospects and opportunities to explore cultural and heritage sites, are but some of the factors bringing increasing number of tourists to the country(www.zambiatourism.com). Strategically located in southern and central Africa, Zambia is consistently named one of the Africa’s top tourist destinations and remarkable growth has been seen in the tourism industry over the last several years (www.zambiatourism.com). . This has been backed up by investment in tourism rehabilitation projects, the upgrading of the country’s four international airports to international standards, expanded flight schedule and intensified making initiatives.
