Buddhism was the main inspiration for art in the region, and the most important Buddhist structures were created between the first and second century BCE. Such as the Great Stupa of Sanchi, except it was built in the third century. The Great Stupa was not a tomb, however it was a monument. It is said to be that out of all of the early Indian monuments, none of them compare to the ultimate and most famous Great Stupa of Sanchi. Located at Sanchi, Central India it is admired by all.

A great deal of Cambodian Hindu sculpture is preserved at Angkor, however organized looting has had a heavy impact on many sites around the country. In Thailand, sculpture was almost exclusively of Buddha images. Many Thai sculptures or temples are gilded, and on occasion enriched with inlays.

Both of these monuments have many similarities and differences in structure and symbolism, but the dominant theme that ties them together is the idea that they connecting our real with the heavenly realm. These buildings came from completely different cultures, yet they have surprisingly similar styles. For example, both buildings require the visitor to first enter though a series of columns before reaching the main attraction.

He is able to observe the many different customs of the people from each town and he mentions the variety of living conditions and trading goods. There are many different forms of Buddhism, but all forms believe in the teachings of Buddha. Buddhism is a hard religion to define and the simplest way to define it is “individuals who believe in Buddha’s teachings” (Maguire). The term ‘religion’ is “perhaps not a very good term to use in connection with Buddhism since it recognizes no God” (Zaehner).
