Tourism dates back in India to before the verdict period. Ashoka the Great travelled around India setting up special memorials and rest houses for other travelers. He travelled around to spread the doctrines of Buddha. Pilgrimage was an important part of travel, and monasteries were built for the pilgrims. Brahmin villages were focused on attracting scholars. The first known foreign visitors were thought to be the Persians. There is evidence that the Persians visited India with caravans in the inscriptions, dating back to the ruling of King Darius. Income for the state was mainly entertainment, dancing halls and licensed gambling, but with the fall of the great empires, there was a halt in trade and commerce. People were no longer able to travel and this lead to the sea-side resorts and spas to be hardly used around the medieval period. 1st August 1963, Air India was created and India was now part of the air industry. There were very few flights, only four nightly flights on the India/UK route and three fort-nightly flights for the India/Nairobi route. The ITDC (India Tourism Development Corporation) was started in the late 1960’s to provide international visitors the comforts of western living. ITDC also aided on the development of modern infrastructure (e.g. the Ashaka group of hotels). Today, tourism is the largest service industry in India, providing 8.78% of total employment.
