Tourism and Intercultural Communication Kim Amat Com/360 April 1, 2013 Tourism and Intercultural Communication Tourism can play a large part of a country’s finical income. Many countries welcome tourist, but it has become increasingly dangerous in some countries for tourist to visit. The largest question that comes to mind is it due to communication or the lack of said communication between the different cultures. As stated by Lustig & Koester (2010) “there is a corresponding interplay of forces that both encourage and discourage accommodation and understanding among people who differ from one another” (pg. 1). This essay will focus on two different countries and their views on tourism in their country. The beautiful country of Italy with beautiful villas vineyards, wonderful food, and gorgeous beaches which is what attracts many tourists to this beautiful land. The other country that will be visited in this essay is France. France is the number one country for tourism not just Americans, but other countries as well. France with its charm, beautiful beaches, skiing, history, and abundant shopping bring tourists to visit this gorgeous country. The problem that both of these countries face by visiting Americans are the stereotyping that is involved. Along with the intercultural communications problems that is faced on both sides. An employee’s personal dignity which is being threatened by visiting tourists who have preconceived notions must be addressed to keep positive relations going. Preconceived notions about the people, the culture of a country that is being visited can be overcome and intercultural competence can be achieved.
