Gum Tooth Decay 1 Gum: Tooth Decay 2 Abstract Many people think chewing gum cannot harm their teeth. Now research shows that chewing too much sugar gum can result in tooth decay. In high doses gum containing sugar can be risk to dental health, not only causing tooth decay but also gum diseases and even heart diseases. Studies have shown that sugar-free gum does not contribute to tooth decay. However, researchers have found that chewing sugar filled gum causes tooth decay, but it can cause much more than toothaches. Studies have shown that is a person chews regular gum for less than 14-20 minutes, then the sugar is left on the teeth from the gum. Enough salvia will not be in the mouth to rinse away the sugar. Tooth Decay 3 Gum: Tooth Decay Many people believe that chewing regular and sugar-free gum does not have any effect on tooth decay. However, it is proven that sugar-free gum does not contribute significantly to tooth decay unlike gum containing sugar. Clinical studies have shown that sugarless gum can help prevent tooth decay. These studies show that chewing sugarless gum for 15-10 minutes after a meal can help prevent tooth decay. [ (ICGA, 2008) ] Clinical studies have also shown that eating gum containing natural sweeteners causes tooth decay, and researches say that it matter if you chew sugar-free or sugar gum. Artificial sweeteners such as, Sorbitol, Aspartame and Neotame are FDA approved to be used in chewing gums. Artificial Sweeteners Aspartame, Sorbitol and Mannitol are proven to be non-cavity causing sweeteners. Unlike sugar, artificial sweeteners do not contribute to tooth decay and do not contain significant calories.
