For the first time, an African-American male, Senator Barack Obama, and a Caucasian female, Senator Hilary Clinton, would compete again each other to become the 2008 Democratic candidate. Contrary to this important event, writer Toni Morrison believes that when choosing a fit candidate neither race nor gender matters. Toni Morrison is the only African- American to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature. Morrison writes a letter of endorsement in order to express her support and hopes to gain supporters for then—senator Barack Obama as the candidate for the 2008 Presidential election. This type of rhetoric is not effective, and often causes poor results, and impacts society negatively. Contrastively, rhetoric at its best uses tactics such as deep thought, reflection, straightforward ideas, and clear communication with the audience. The result of this is often an effective message that achieves the speaker’s purpose and claim in its entirety. Morrison leaves the audience with a sense of responsibility in that supporting Barack Obama is the only way for America to reach its full potential. In this specific text cause and effect cannot be established. It cannot be inferred that this letter was the reason Barack Obama won Democratic candidate and the 2008 Presidency, but it is evident that Morrison’s letter helped Obama gain supporters, and positively impacted his campaign, which was her objective. With her credentials, intelligence and passion, she helped Barack Obama in his efforts through positive reinforcement.
