Introduction TomTom was founded in 1991 in Amsterdam, it currently has 52 offices in 35 different countries, and the company grew from scratch to a multinational enterprise within 15 years. The company provided us with the Personal Navigation Device that took a whole different approach to navigation. The founders of TomTom are Peter-Frans Pauwels, Pieter Geelen, Harold Goddijn and Corinne Vigreux. All of them are still working at TomTom at the moment. The founders developed the vision that made TomTom from a start-up to a large multinational. The company profile states that it “designs and develops innovative products that make it easy for people to keep moving towards their goals” (TomTom 2014). TomTom is widely known for its incredibly innovative navigations devices and mapping products and currently is a market leader in Europe. In the first years TomTom tried to establish a market leader position in personal digital assisting devices software and applications for personal digital assisting devices. However when in 2001 more accurate GPS data became available they considered personal navigation devices as a major opportunity. A year later their first device, the TomTom Navigator became available to customers. This product was received with major enthusiasm and TomTom started to become a market leader. The product was launched across Europe and TomTom recognized its opportunities with this device. At present they have several business units. These are consumers, automotive, licensing and telematics. The automotive division provides maps and software to car manufacturers.
