Tommy John Tommy John is a surgery most pitchers go through, due because of the arm motion your arm goes through when you’re throwing a baseball. The reason why mostly pitchers get it is because there the ones that throws the most. So you’re barely going to see a second basemen or a first baseman need Tommy john, maybe a catcher because he has to throw a lot to. So what is Tommy john? Tommy john is a surgery that is prosegered on your UCL (Ulnar Collateral Ligament) which is to reconstruction and repairs the torn ligament. Tommy john surgery is caused by strong repetitive over hand throwing that puts pressure on that ligament. This first surgery was performed on Tommy John who was a major league pitcher in 1974, and that’s how the surgery got its name. The surgery usually lasts about an hour an a half or less if that and patients are able to leave the same day. The way the surgery works is by the doctor getting another similar ligament in the wrist and transferring it to the one in the elbow. Tunnels are then drilled in the humorous and in the ulna where the harmed ligament is usually at and then it is replace with the other one, and then the doctor stitches up the wounds and your good to go home. The reason why I’m writing about this topic in health is because a couple of months ago I had a very sharp pain in my elbow every time I would throw. It wouldn’t just hurt when I would throw it would also while I wasn’t throwing it would come and go. I was feeling a very sharp pain in my right elbow which is the arm I throw with, and yes im a pitcher and the pain would feel like if it was inside my elbow, like if a knife was inside cutting me up. So I informed my parents on this pain I was having and they took me to the doctor, the doctor told me it could be my ucl, which is the Tommy John ligament. So the doctors wanted to check it
