Tolerance and Intolerance

Society has become more tolerant and enlightened. (Makow, 1999, p.1) In life everyone has the choice to be tolerant or intolerant. The freedom of the democratic society allows choosing the way to live, the way to behave, and the way to react to other people behaviour. The understanding of why people are choosing one way or another is rested on knowledge of society and personality, politics and ideology, and many others components of that kind. Tolerance, in particular, is a skill not a trace of character. Tolerance as a personal skill could be developed and enhanced or could be neglected. I believe that tolerance is a personal choice, which is arising from values, cultural perceptions, and judgement of the individual. Though, it is complicated choice framed by social norms, state policy, and law. Interestingly enough, intolerance is derived from the same sources. Tolerance and Intolerance in Everyday Life Tolerance and intolerance are not necessarily two types of behaviour that opposed to each other. Obviously, to tolerate crude language, does not automatically mean to be culturally open-minded, even if it is a daily routine for many citizens. In another hand, to be intolerant to crude language does not always mean to behave out of cultural urge. What is tolerance and intolerance then? In my understanding, it is a logical choice that could be and should be developed as a social skill. Evidently it is the choice that is based on reason and knowledge however I would not be arguing that individual traces of character are not crucial for making choices and applying skills. To tolerate something or someone, an individual has to measure or compare the reason against the consequences. Thus, tolerance is a compromise.
