Donnelly Wednesday 3rd April, 2013 The Bahamas is not only known for its sun and sand, but also its vast variety of wildlife. The environment is a natural money maker yet Bahamians blatantly ignore its cries for better treatment. It is as if people expect the environment to take care of itself. That is not how it happens. Bahamians must come to a realization that it does not happen in that manner, the wildlife cannot do it and that initiative must be taken from them. If Bahamians do not take the stand that is required for saving its endangered species, the Bahamas is at risk of losing a culture, a variety of native species can fall at the hand of extinction as well as suffering loss of scientific value. A few endangered species that will be discussed in the essay is the Bahama Parrot, the Bahamian Rock Iguana, the Hawksbill Turtle, the Nassau Grouper and the Queen Conch. Why do species become endangered one may ask? According to a section on an article in the Wild Times magazine states “Extinction is not something new. Fossil records show that many plants and animals have become extinct since life first appeared on earth.” First, the Bahamas is dependent upon its environment and the environment supports the Bahamas. Taking away from the environment contributes to culture is a visible sign of cultural deterioration. When the Bahamas is promoted via magazines and commercials, the sun, sand and sea, which include species that live in the Bahamas are the main highlights shown.
