The cigarette is the deadliest object in the history of human civilization. “Tobacco use causes 6 million deaths per year” (Fast Facts). Despite these many deaths, tobacco is still available all over Canada. Smoking tobacco should be made illegal in Canada. In view of facts that it causes health problems, costs the government millions and is also harmful for the environment. Firstly, smoking has been shown dangerous to health. Tobacco is the cause of millions of deaths and illnesses. It has been known as one of the causes for heart diseases. “Atherosclerosis (buildup of fatty substances in the arteries) is a chief contributor to the high number of deaths from smoking” (Smoking & Cardiovascular Disease). Smoking also causes bronchitis, which is the inflammation of the mucous membrane in the bronchial tubes. Lung cancer and many other kind of cancers are produced by smoking tobacco. Additionally, tobacco is the main cause of many health problems. In conclusion, smoking tobacco is injurious to health. Secondly, tobacco costs the government millions of dollars. Tobacco manufacturing costs lots of money. The government doesn’t only pay for the production but also for the production employees. Approximately 1,419 workers work for tobacco manufacturing. The government also pays for the material used to make tobacco cigarettes. Additionally, the government also pays for people who get ill smoking as healthcare is free in Canada. All the money that is spent on tobacco by the government could help improve the conditions in Canada; for example, the money could be used to have better living conditions of Canadian Reserves.
