It established a weak central government with strong individual state governments. Because of this the federal government was too weak to maintain control over all the colonies, which led to many problems amongst the states. It left the country without a political leader such as a president. It also left the country no way to pay off the war debts from the previous years and it was lacking a tax
This is demonstrated in documents 4, 5, and 6. Henry Haskell states that “The government undertook such far-reaching responsibility in affairs that the fiber of the citizens weakened” (Document 4) This shows that the decline of the empire was due to heavy taxation that couldn’t support the government. If the taxes couldn’t sustain the government then it wouldn’t be able to control the people. According to Montanelli “The military crisis was the result of… proud old aristocracy’s… shortage of children” (Document 5) This means that many children weren’t old enough to go into the military which caused the decrease of soldiers. With the lack of soldiers, it would be easier to invade Rome, which could’ve led to the decline of the Empire.
The 1790s was a decade of international crisis and domestic dissension. The crises were developing because Americans were having a hard time determining what it meant to be American. As life under the American Constitution had just been underway, America had no history of accepting political opposition as legitimate. Political parties were thought of as engines of corruption or treason. America was just starting out as a new country, and their foreign policy was not yet strong enough to protect itself.
However the source goes on to criticise the statement saying that it isn’t good for “widowed mother with children, the chronic sick, 400,000 unemployed and millions of pensioners without pensions.” Therefore I can infer that the source doesn’t agree with the statement as it states that there is a clear majority of people who don’t benefit within this time period, mainly the people who are benefitting are from the upper classes. However this is obviously biased as it’s from a labour party manifesto therefore isn’t totally reliable. Source 2 appears to also be against the statement because in the background signs of the source there is hints on how the benefits are for the richer people. For instance “set the TOP people free” showing that the conservatives only care about the upper classes and that at that period in time only they benefit. It also shows that it’s not actually Macmillan saying the speech but the Chancellor of the Exchequer which could represent that it’s him coming up with the ideas, they don’t like him or Macmillan is too afraid to do his own speeches.
Summary: In this article, the reader is informed about how provisional ballots might delay results in close races of the presidential election for days. The reason behind the delays is the new ID laws that are still being challenged in court. The law mandates voters to show identification at the polls this fall. This causes a problem for many people, especially senior citizens. Elders, who are home most of the time, don't see the need in carrying ID, thus they don't own any.
There is a law limiting the amount that a single group can give, but that’s not effective because a big company can make a bunch of little PAC’s and suddenly $5,000 becomes $200,000 or more. It’s a huge flaw in the system, and it cannot be allowed to be abused anymore before congress is in complete gridlock because they can’t endanger their interest. These interest groups aren’t just targeting politicians they are also buying votes; one example the article gives is The National Automobile Dealers Association getting a bill that would require them to inform buyers about defects in the car shot down. Along with the United Auto Workers paying $1 million to raise support for “domestic content”. It is so evident of a problem in our political process.
The United States Constitution was the first constitution in the world. It was play an important of American history, marked America became a democracy country. Many events prompted Congress to approve the Constitution. Although America had defeat Great British and won the Revolutionary War, the United States government was weak. The 13 colonies followed the Articles of Confederation, but every state had its laws, so the government had not enough power to solve the problem between each states.
To begin with, it defeats the whole point of having democratically elected officials. They are mandated with the responsibility of making decisions on behalf of the citizens. Having referendums undermines this role making them powerless, almost useless. Another disadvantage of holding referendums is the extensive period of time it takes. Referendums cannot be used to make a decision of immediate necessity as it takes weeks and sometimes months to come up with a final decision.
However, I feel both went into submission with the political world and how politicians are making it hard for the rest of the 99% of the American population. Once an issue reaches the political soup of this country it never reaches an end, just continuous excuses on how not to make it equal for everyone or if any attempts are made to make it a bit easier, it conflicts with personal interest. Forgive me for being quite blunt but it is a bunch of excuses or invalid reasons provided by our own government to not succeed. Over the recent years I had come to realize we as a society are getting more and more babied by our laws to “protect” each individual equally. Soon we will have charges pressed against us just for breathing each other’s air.
The problems with the way in which the electoral system worked, meant that the majority people wanted change and therefore pushed for electoral reform. Many constituencies were left underrepresented; As Thomas Paine explains in his book “Right of Man”, cities with thousands were receiving the same representation in parliament as small villages “The town of Old Sarum, which contains not three houses, sends two members; and the town of Manchester, which contains upwards of sixty thousand souls, is not admitted to send any. Is there any principle in these things?” The new industrial towns were also facing troubles with the services in the areas, as there was not enough to of it to cover the rising population the fact that they couldn’t not then bring this issue up due to lack of representation also led to the need for reform. The lack of representation was not the only injustice people felt with the electoral system, suffrage was also corrupt, in many cases powerful landlords in control of small constituencies knows as pocket or nomination boroughs would manipulate inhabitants with such tactics as bribery, force or even their wealth, as usually they were part of nobility, to vote for who they wanted in power. Examples of this can be seen when the Earl of Lonsdale brought 14,000 miners and made then freemen outside their
