“To what extent do the novels ‘Animal farm’ and ‘1984’ show how authoritarian governments create social structures within the respective societies they discuss which isolate individuals and thereby control them.” ‘1984’ and ‘Animal Farm’ were both written to show the dangers of authoritarian and ultranationalist governments after George Orwell fought for the communist Spain against the fascist in 1936. However Orwell saw how both sides manipulated their people with empty promises and ideals while the privileged class benefited from the hard labour of their people, this dissolution happened when he returned to Barcelona after fighting on the front; he found it a changed city. No longer a place where the socialist word “comrade” was really felt to mean something, it was a city returning to "normal". Even worse, he was to find that the group he was with, the POUM (Partido Obrero de Unificación de Marxista), was now accused of being a Fascist militia, secretly helping the fascist leader Franco. And this is reflected in the two novels. In order to isolate people, the world in 1984 first seeks to create a structure similar to Stalinist Russia whereby the lowest level, called the proles are left to their own devices and live in extreme poverty. The idea is that members of the outer party feel vastly superior to the proles “... (indeed everyone in the party was aware) that the prizes were largely imaginary”. In truth their lives are little different, with those few luxuries providing only a facade of superiority. Other than luxuries the outer party have better education to perform more sophisticated jobs. The two groups have a taboo against mixing, “As usual, there was no definite rule against talking to proles and frequenting their pubs, but it was far too unusual an action to pass unnoticed.” This is so that the uneducated proles do not discover how their lives can
