How far was Henry VI to blame for the conflict of 1455? The causation of the first battle of St. Albans is a complex and intricate issue, involving many factors. The king’s weaknesses and incompetence made him an innately unsuitable ruler for the times, and his failures to accumulate the majority of the attributes expected of a king, such as control of the nobles and successful military pursuits, may have contributed substantially to the battle in 1455. However, this can be disputed; given the financial state of the country, it is hardly surprising that Henry was unable to keep a firm control over the avaricious nobles, whilst also lacking a standing army. Additionally, the underlying problem of who had a greater claim to the crown, instigated when Henry IV usurped the throne from Richard II, was still a concern, and inevitably this was bound to result in a bloody battle in order to settle the disagreement.
Henry had several advantages that came with becoming King of England, England had well established laws and customs that were in place, despite them being under strain through Stephens reign, they were still in place and waiting to be used. Henry’s own character traits could have been an additional factor that led to Henry being able to establish himself quickly in England. He was a very intelligent, witty and well liked man. People would have trusted him and liked him because of his personality and because he spent the first few years of his reign trying to straighten out the mess that Stephen had left behind and restore the support of the people in the monarchy. Henry spent the first year of his reign settling disputes and grievances that the people of England had.

One of the reasons for the economic boom was the introduction of hire-purchase whereby you put a deposit on an item that you wanted and paid installments on that item, with interest, so that you paid back more than the price for the item but did not have to make one payment in one go. Hire-purchase was easy to get and people got into debt without any real planning for the future. In the 1920’s it just seemed to be the case that if you wanted something you got it.
However this was not the only factor that increased the electoral support for the Nazi party. The main reason why the party got an increase in support was because of the weakness of the Weimar republic allowing Hitler to promise a better Germany and more jobs for everyone else. To an extent the popularity of Hitler gave the party many voters. Hitler was seen as a strong leader and was excellent at public speaking and was very persuasive to many people mainly women and the youth of Germany. Hitler would tell the country what they wanted to hear, one example was providing jobs as unemployment increased massively.
