The quote comes from the semi-autobiographic novel: To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. In the book, there are many characters that show courage in their own personal way. Atticus Finch a moral lawyer who took a case that went against a prejudice community to help an accused black man, Tom Robinson. Mrs. Dubose, morphine addicted a woman who wishes to be free of the pain killing drug. Atticus and Mrs. Dubose exhibit courage in their own personal ways even though they know they are going to lose in the end. Atticus has been portrayed by having moral courage throughout the novel. He knows that with only a black man’s word against a Ewells, a white man word. This book was set in the 1930s, making a black man’s word nothing in the eyes of a white man. To the jury and rest of the prejudiced community of Maycomb a black man’s word could never be trusted and white men never lie. In addition, “if I didn’t [take the case] I couldn’t hold my head up in town, I couldn’t represent in this country in legislature, I couldn’t tell you or Jem not to do something.”(#) Atticus moral personality makes him do the right thing even though people will look down upon him for representing a black man convicted of rap. He believes if he turns down this trail he will feel shameful and that no one should respected him. Although they lost the trial, Atticus courage to see thing through would make then be able to win the appeal Harper Lee gave Mrs. Dubose emotional courage; by making her addicted to morphine and dreaming of being free of it. “You rarely win, but sometimes you do.
