Compassion Essay By: Sean Cleary Atticus is a very unique character in the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” he possesses a strong sense of justice, equality, and compassion. These qualities are excellent character traits but unfortunaly they land him and his family in some very difficult situations with the community they live in. Atticus Finch shows a consistent voice of compassion and morality in this book. Despite the dangers this puts him in, He diligently works to prove tom Robinsons innocence, is very kind to Mrs. Dubose even though she constantly insults Atticus and her children about how Atticus is defending a black man, and last of all Atticus decides to believe the claim that bob Well fell on his knife because he knows it will save Boo Bradley a lot of trouble. Mrs.Dubose is a cantankerous sick lady who is coming to the end of her days. She spends much of her time on her front porch insulting jem and scout of how their fathers an”a nigger lover” and other things that she believes are wrong but them and Atticus. Jem has an anger range and trashes miss Duboses’s garden one day, after this happens Atticus says to Jem “son I have no dought you’ve been annoyed by you contemporaries about me lawing for niggers as you would say, but to do something like this to a sick old lady is inexcusable”. he punishes Jem by making him read to Mrs. Dubose every day. Atticus knows that Mrs. Dubose is verbally harassing jem and scout but Atticus he still requires Jem and scout to help out Mrs.Dubose . Atticus shows a lot of compassion for Mrs. Dubose here, he was able to put her bad qualities aside and see that she’s still a good lady, that is why he requires the kids to help her out every
