When racism be over? Why does the color of someones skin make them differnet? In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus uses details to reveal the innocence of Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was accused of raping and beating a white girl, Mayella Ewell, simply because he was black. Atticus, a white man, has to defend Tom Robinson. In the end, Atticus does a good job defending Tom Robinson because he proves him innocent over an all white jury and against white family. Mayella, the girl supposevly raped, and Bob, her father, claimed that Mayella was beaten on the right side of her face, and Atticus proves that Bob Ewell is left handed while Tom Robinsons left hand is diabled. " 'Can you read and write?' 'I most positevely can.' ...Mr.Ewell wrote on the back of the envelope and looked up complacently to see Judge Taylor staring at him...'You're left handed Mr.Ewell.' " (Lee 179-180). This shows that Bob Ewell was plenty credible for beating and raping his daughter, Mayella Ewell. "Tom Robinson reached around, ran his fingers under his arm and lifted it...As he raised hes right hand, the useless one slipped off the bible..." (Lee 192). This reveals that Tom couldnt of beaten Mayella because his whole left arm is paralyzed. People could diagree to say Tom was faking his handicaped arm to prove to the jury he was innocent, when really he may not be in thier eyes. Atticus makes it believable for Tom to be innocent because its not possible for a man with a paralyzed left arm to have beaten a girl on the right side of the
