In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the novel is set in Alabama America during the early 1930's. The character Jean Louise Finch (Scout) is essential to the text as she helps the readers understand important life lesson's throughout the book. The life lessons learnt are it's a sin to kill a mockingbird, to walk around in someone else's shoes and courage. Scout first learns of courage when Jem has to read for the old lady down the road Mrs Dubose. During the book Mrs Dubose dies from being a morphine addict "It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." Atticus says this to Scout and Jem showing them what courage is, because Mrs Dubose tried to give up morphine but being an addict she struggled. The quote means that she knew she wasn't going to be able to give up but tried her best to even though she knew she wouldn't. This is an important life lesson to learn for Scout and the reader as they see that no matter what age you are you can have courage. Lee uses Scout to help readers learn the life to walk in someone else's shoes/skin. Scout learns this life lesson from her school teacher Ms Fisher, this is because Scout has trouble getting along with her. Atticus sits Scout down and tells her” You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." This helps Scout understand that Ms Fisher doesn't understand the locals and their ways because she is not form the town of Maycomb. Scout takes this lesson all through the book and keeps reminding the readers of this life lesson. The life lesson of it's a sin to kill a mockingbird is shown when Atticus buys Jem and Scout air rifles for Christmas.
