For it is a natural human instinct to stereotype. For centuries, we have been stereotyping different races such as the blacks. The whites used to see them as evil doers, but now we realize that it is not true. In the book, Tom Robinson was killed because he was stereotyped. If he had an impartial jury, he would have been a free man.
Breaking the Norms of Society in To Kill a Mockingbird In the 1930’s, events in “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee take place with a very different society from the ones we live in presently. With sexism being the law and innocence being seen last while background comes first, leading to many problems such as breaking social norms. Maycomb follows a rule that labels individuals of the same background in life and ethnicity together. Each group is expected to act a certain way, if an individual does not, it is considered breaking the norms of society which links to an outcome of an automatic consequence. With the superiority of racism, it results as the countless reason for it.
When the Hater Meets the Hated- Why is Tom Robinson Guilty? One may be punished for something he or she never did depending on the circumstances in their community. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows in Maycomb County, a society being controlled by racism, Tom Robinson is punished for assaulting Mayella Ewell even though he is the victim. If the majority of the inhabitants of a community are racist, the racist social values influence everything that takes place in the courts of the community. Thus the racist social values of Maycomb County are responsible for the failure of Atticus Finch’s defense for Tom Robinson.
That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (p 98) Atticus tells Jem and Scout this when he presents them with a gun for their christmas present and tells them never to shoot a mockingbird. The idea behind the warning given by Atticus and Miss Maudie is that if one was to kill a mockingbird, they would be destroying a symbol of innocence. The corruptions that affect the novel’s ‘mockingbirds’ are there to reflect the main message- that innocence can be mutilated by prejudice and intolerance. The existence of both innocence and prejudice reflects that good and evil exist together and are part of one another in all situations. This juxtaposition is central to the concept of the novel.
While there may have been many who disliked and hated African Americans, the Civil Rights campaigners crafted and cunningly planned tactics to permanently change the opinions of the brain-washed racists using methods and people, such as: Little Rock, Martin Luther King and Rosa parks (bus boycotts) – as source 7 displays R. Parks being arrested for refusing to give up her seat for sitting in the ‘white only seats.’ Racism was also stored in the hearts and minds, which can be identified through Source 3, which shows the two separated sinks that a black and white person would use – the clean, spacious tap for the whites, and the dirty, tiny tap that the black people would use. While some may argue that Little Rock was the most important event of the civil rights campaign, others may argue that Little Rock was not the most important event. However, it is clearly evident that Little Rock was indeed the most important tactic to tackle segregation. Conversely, it is clear that Little Rock was not the most important event of the Civil Rights Movement. For example, in Source 13, a young, intelligent, black girl is present being violated, spat on and yelled at by the white, racist crowd.
Abounding of these colleges became the primary centers of atramentous attrition to Jim Crow, although their administrators and agents frequently differed over how best to accomplish their stand. At the primary and accessory academy levels, absolutely ballsy efforts were fabricated by bankrupt atramentous agents to brainwash their pupils, usually in face of white attrition that about included violence. Whites were about so against to atramentous apprenticeship that abounding states in the South banned to body atramentous accessible top schools until the twentieth-century. Now allegory is accurately gone. But is that true?

The malicious acts committed by Malcolm X reflect the idea that people ignore truth to conform to society. Known for having strong opinions, Malcolm X seems to be an unlikely victim of blind conformity. However, as shown in his essay, “My First Conk”, Malcolm X was victimized by this need to conform. Changing to look or behave like another because it is more desired by the public is due to a disregarding of self-claimed morals and values, an over emphasis of the media and outside opinions, and an insecurity. In “My First Conk”, Malcolm X assured that black people were being brainwashed to believe that they actually were inferior to white people, thus they conked their hair; which was a hair straightener gel made from lye popular among African-American men from the 1920s to the 1960s.
Labeling and stereotyping. They don’t seem like a big deal until it causes chaos in the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In Maycomb, this is a big issue in the community. Scout is watching and understanding this world differently, being young and very influential racisms changes her, in maturing and her personality. Scout is the main character, she is the reason the Finches get in all these dilemmas.
