However, the runner in “To an Athlete Dying Young” dies at a young age even though his fame does not: while in “Ex-Basketball Player” the ex- player’s fame washes away in his growing of age. There are many similarities in these two poems. In “To an Athlete Dying Young” and “Ex-Basketball Player”, the men were famous whenever they were young because of sports. In an excerpt of, “To an Athlete Dying Young,” it states, “The time you won your town the race/we chaired you through the market place. Man and boy stood cheering by, And home we brought you shoulder-high” (Housman).
"To an Athlete Dying Young" begins with vibrant life and celebration of excellent athleticism as a victorious runner has returned home to be "chaired through the market place" (l. 2). The physical description of the runner's position in line two is high. This contributes to the high, cheerful tone that Houseman begins his poem with. Houseman's turn in tone occurs suddenly as the second stanza opens with the young athlete's funeral procession. The athlete is again being held, "shoulder-high" but not in a positive, cheerful way this time.
The Gothic Elements in A Rose For Emily A Rose For Emily is split into five sections without following an order of chronological time. Faulkner uses first person narration to brilng the readers into the town, into Miss Emily. The first sentence of the story shows how the citizens of Jefferson felt about Emily: ”When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to the funeral: the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house, which no one save an old manservant – a combined gardener and cook – had seen in at least ten years.” Then the narration goes on with the description of the Grierson house in Jefferson that Miss Emily Grierson's home has become "an eyesore among eyesores." After a clear description of the history behind the town's relations to Miss Emily, there happens an event “when the next generation, with its more modern ideas, became mayors and aldermen”---- Miss Emily refuses to pay any tax as if it is justified. The second section describes Emily’s life after her father’s death.
“To An Athlete Dying Young” “To An Athlete Dying Young” by A. E. Housman a young sportsman meets a seemingly tragic demise. Yet his death is not just met with grief but also with honor as he dyes the death of a champion and will remain one so long as he is alive in memories as no one will have the chance to defeat him. The poem “To An Athlete Dying Young” embodies the saying “the good die young” and shows there are other ways of viewing death than sorrow and trepidation. At first sight Housman appears to be challenging traditional views about death in this poem. The traditional view being it is best to live a long life and accept ones triumphs and defeats as they come; however, this was not always believed and so Mr. Housman is not conveying a new concept of death but evoking an ancient belief concerning the glory of a champion.
The announcement was for all of the students and faculty to report to the commons area. There was no details on what we were going down there for... As everyone filled into the room, I was standing there, with a few of my closest friends, and my boyfriend right in front of me. Our principles voice came over the microphone, i squeezed my friend's hand harder, and we soon found out the news. Our principle told us... "Student's, we have experienced a tragedy today. Our very own senior here at the high school, Taylor, was struck this afternoon by the train..." Everything after that was a blur, all I can remember was hearing the crying and outbursts of sadness and mourning come out of everyone.
Suicide is a cowardly deed because it is an act of hiding from the truth and avoiding the consequences ahead; yet our esteemed war veterans cannot continue to exist after seeing and committing harsh actions. “Suicide is the tragic conclusion of the failure to address the spectrum of challenges returning veterans face.” (Schleifer) Veterans went to great lengths to protect our freedom and country even if it meant sacrificing their lives; however during the process they have suffered harsh tragedies. There are a number of issues that determine whether our veterans can retire in glory or wallow in their self-pity and despair. Veterans have to withstand various psychological issues from their horrific war experiences and understand what benefits and challenges are provided for them in an attempt to retire in peace. Depression is commonly known as a mental disorder: with lack of energy and difficulty in maintaining concentration or interest in life.
The Great Gatsby Speaks for a Lost Generation Imagine trying to return to a normal existence after a devastating war filled with unimaginable horrors. These experiences could certainly alter anyone’s perception of what is important in life. For a group of young Americans known as the Lost Generation, World War I and its aftereffects caused them to reexamine their entire value system and question all they ever believed to be true about the world they knew. Author Gertrude Stein said of them, “All you young people who served in the war are a lost generation. You have no respect for anything.
Like many of us, McCandless had grown tired and frustrated with everyday life in modern society, and had longed to get away and live a more meaningful existence; however, the reason many of us do not walk away is because we have responsibilities, we have a duty to the people that love us. Unfortunately McCandless was too selfish to ever realize that he can’t just live for himself. Instead Chris decided to abandon his family and leave them to deal with the heartache and pain of his departure; left to forever question and wonder where he was and whether or not he was safe. “I don’t know how I’ll ever get over it. I wasn’t dreaming.
“To an Athlete Dying Young” Reading analyst The title of the poem is “To an Athlete Dying Young”. I chose this poem because I could really relate to the title because I love to play sports. Now that I saw the date this poem was made I am now interested because it was made in 1896 before football and basketball. The first line talks about how this man got celebrated after he won a race. The poem has a second person speaker, the “you” who is talking to the person the poem is about.
He would’ve been happier and died how he wanted. Second, many of these diseases paralyze patients, making them incapable to do everyday tasks or forget simple things. Brittany Maynard stated that there were times she would look into her husband’s eyes and not remember his name. These kind of mishaps can cause great pain and anguish in someone, many can’t bare the pain of not being able to do things they once could so simply and with ease. Finally, patients who are severely ill want to die on their own terms, not prolonging their life more than they have to.
