‘The care and support that we provide for people should enable them to make the most of their lives’ (DH, 2006, p. 13). How successful are health and/or social care services in achieving this aim? In this assignment I will focus on the changes within the health care services, the complex team involved in identifying and meeting individual’s needs. Enabling the service user to maintain their lifestyle as far as is possible. I will be using the case study of Anwar Malik whom is 54 years old from Pakistan. I will look at the challenges he faced when he was recently diagnosed with diabetes and his experiences of primary and secondary health care. Are they supportive of his cultural and psychological needs? Then I will establish what skills and qualities are necessary for a successful relationship within care. Anwar Malik, a 54 year old grocer, lives with his wife Hansa and youngest son Iqbal. He migrated from Pakistan as a young Muslim who uses Punjabi and Urdu as his first language, but speaks English to his wife in their shop. Usually an active and hardworking man, Anwar had been feeling increasingly tired and lethargic, and was always thirsty. Hansa noticed him being less active around the house and going to the toilet a lot. Anwar’s daily visits to his allotment dwindled to once a week and when he was there found less work was being done. Hansa became increasingly concerned and urged Anwar to go the doctor but he felt she was overreacting, forgetting that he is no longer a young man. (Open University, 2012, p71) Anwar noticed problems with his eyesight and decided to get stronger glasses at the chemist. However when the Optometrist tested his eyes, he said there were worrying signs of degeneration and insisted he should visit his doctor urgently and get further tests to check what was causing the deterioration; but Anwar was reluctant.
