Tigers are the largest members of the cat family. There are six tiger subspecies known to man; The Bengal, Sumatran, Siberian, Indochinese, Caspian, and the Bali Tiger. (Nichols, Michael.) Lately, two of these species have become extinct during the 20th century; including the Caspian and Bali Tigers. The remaining species are endangered to this day. Each tiger has unique characteristics that make them severely different from the other species. The Bengal Tiger, the second largest of the tiger species, originates in parts of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Burma, and Bhutan. (“Tigers”). Their habitat varies with rainforests and grasslands which each of these areas have plenty of. The physical appearance of a Bengal Tiger changes slightly with the area that they live in. All tigers are orange with a whitish body. (“Tigers Physical Characteristics.”) And their brownish black stripes are the most random acting a lot like a human fingerprint. The Bengal Tigers breed very often. The female is fertile for only a couple of days so they have to breed frequently. There are about three cubs per litter and each coming to about two lbs when born. They start moving on their own about eighteen months and completely leave their family at two years of age. Bengal Tigers are critically endangered due to illegal hunting and habitat destruction. Despite this, they love small rivers, lakes, and ponds and are known to hunt and kill while in the water. Sumatran Tigers are the smallest of the tigers species. Their name comes from their homeland island of Sumatra where the tiger lives. They can only be found on this island. Their appearance is different than that of other species because their stripes are much smaller.
