Jaylan Norwood Mrs. Offenbacher AP English Lit 12/13/12 The Importance of Being Earnest In Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, Jack and Algy have just been discovered about lying about their real name. .After Gwendolyn and Cecily walk away, Jack and Algy are then seen fighting over muffins. This is an example of thoughtful laughter, because the problem of the story is about finding a way to be forgiven by Gwendolyn and Cecily for lying about their names, but instead the conflict is Algy eating all the muffins in this scene . The “Muffin” scene contributes to the play as a whole, because it shows how a serious and romantic play can also be humorous. It makes you think about what muffins have to do with being forgiven. Muffins just contribute irrelevancy and distraction from the main purpose of the scene. Thoughtful laughter could also be a surprise to catch the reader off guard. In the end, it will have the reader thinking, “Why?” “Thoughtful laughter” is when something funny happens and it makes you think about the actual importance of the story, and why that scene was put into the play. Thoughtful laughter is define to be irrelevant to the scene, because muffins and romantic has no similarities in this scene. Thoughtful laughter makes you think of why Algy and jack are fighting over muffins. The Muffin scene was one of the funniest parts in the play, and it could have been to distract the reader. When I was reading this book, I was thinking of a boring book, but the muffin scene caught me off guard. I was thinking how this makes all men look like liar and incompetent. Well, this scene worked, and it could catch any reader off guard to make them think about it and have all these questions.
