Gulick was born on December 4, 1865 in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father Luther Halsey Gulick and his mother Louisa Lewis Gulick were both Congregationalist missionaries and had seven children and Luther was the fifth child born. As a child, young Luther spent the first fifteen years of his life moving from Hawaii to Spain, Italy, and Japan. In 1880 he finally returned to the United States and in 1882 he enrolled in the preparatory department of Oberlin College.
In 1893, along with Kicksham Scanlon, he established his first law office. In that same year he wrote Benedict Arnold. He got married to Helen Jenkins on June 21, 1898. The following year they gave birth to their first son, Hardin Masters.

John Simpson Kirkpatrick was born in England, in South Shields to a Scottish couple in 1892. Simpson was educated from the age of 6 to his 13th birthday, learning how to read and write fluently. In June 1903 he decided to leave school and start work on a horse drawn milk delivery run. He was a member of the Territorial Army (the British Army reserve corps) serving with the Royal Field Artillery in a Howitzer Battery at South Shields. In 1909 Simpson’s father died and he wanted to follow in his footsteps, so he joined the Merchant Navy at 17 years of age, working as a stoker and steward.
