During the time period of 1801 to 1809, a significant amount of events took place. Such events included the Louisiana Purchase and the Marbury v. Madison case, which led to the Judicial Review. To add on to this era was still the existence of slavery. Lewis and Clark had explored the new western territories. According to The Era of Jefferson, this expedition was seen as the beginning of the Great Western Migration by historians. The War of 1812, also known as the Revolutionary War part II, was a war between Great Britain and America caused by disagreements over shipping and trade. Since France and Britain was still at war they began to block trade, where this affected the United States. Thomas Jefferson was the president of the United States at the time that all of the above events occurred, including others not stated. Thomas Jefferson was born in Albemarle County, Virginia on April 13, 1743, to Jane Randolph and Peter Jefferson. He attended the college of William and Mary and later studied law. In 1769 Jefferson became a representative for the Virginia House of Burgesses, where he served in that position for six years. In 1770, he began building Monticello, which took years for him to design. On January 1, 1772 he married Martha Wayles Skelton, and together they reared six children. Upon Jeffersons return to Virgina from his term with Congress, he was elected governor from 1779 to1781. In 1790 he was the post of secretary under George Washington. Four years prior to his secretary position he was elected the third president of the United States. Jefferson was a public official, historian, philosopher, and plantation owner. Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826.
