Kandace Atchison ELPW 111 Introduction to the Electrical Industry and Power Grid Unit 1 Written Assignment Thomas Alva Edison had the idea to create a light bulb with a corresponding electrical system, so he worked diligently in his lab at Menlo Park, New Jersey, to bring electricity to America and the World. “Edison began experimenting with electric light in November of 1877, but he had not been the first to invent the incandescent light bulb. In fact almost forty years prior to Edison’s attempt, inventors from all across the globe, had attempted to produce a bulb that could illuminate brightly while also being safe.” (Jones 55) Most had working models that would burnout too quickly, were not safe, or produced too dim or too bright of a light. Edison’s early attempts had the same type of results. He experimented in both incandescent and arch lighting. The arch lights required a large amount of electricity to pass between electrodes and produced a blinding light, making it less feasible for use in homes. One advantage Edison’s research did have over the others was that he arrived later in the game. Because of this, he was able to study the trial and errors of his colleagues and succeed where they had failed. “Another advantage for Edison was that he decided to build his light bulb around an entire electrical system of his own design. He would design and produce generators to supply electricity with integrated fuses to regulate and control it.” (Flatow 11) After designing the electrical system he began working on his light bulb. The young inventor began to experiment with different filament materials and shapes. To resolve the problem of the filament melting, shortly after a current was run through it, Edison had developed “a thermal regulator to prevent the incandescing element of his lamp from melting” says biographer Paul Israel (Jones 55-56) What this
