Henley, J13 September, 2011 Mason, D ENG 1301/COMP Subject: Descriptive Paragraph Assignment “This is my Rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine...” isn't just something out of a Stanley Kubrick movie or some right-wing militant rantings. It is also known as the “Rifleman's Creed” written by Major Rupertus on the relationship between a Marine and his rifle. I remember vividly that hot August afternoon in 1987 when I was standing at the position of attention at the window of the Armory getting my M16A2 service rifle issued to me and having to recite “the prayer” three different times to get it, all the while, a Drill Instructor was right in my ear giving me an earful about not moving fast enough. I remember smell of the “CLP” gun oil that it was covered with when I got it, you never forget the pungent aroma that seeped out of the barrel and chamber. It gets all over your clothes. The M16A2 has several distinct sounds. Not just the sound of a round being fired successfully out of its barrel, but the slaps of Marines hands on the stocks in unison during close order drill, the sound of its charging handle is unique when chambering a round, and the rare, but unfortunate sound of an inept recruit dropping it on the parade deck. That poor Marine will probably never drop it ever again. My rifle looked just like everyone else's. It was black, and it had tell- tale scratches on the buttstock and handguards from it's prior use. 43 was stenciled in green paint on the butt. Of course I had to memorize the serial number (3432815 yes I still remember after almost 25 years) just like I had to know the “Creed” and the specifications and how to take it apart, clean it, and put “her” back together again, and again, and again.
