This I Believe Irina Stadalsky Collins English 12 3rd period September 15, 2014 Being Yourself in a Messed-up World Being too quick to judge someone can be a major mistake and an opportunity lost. A great example is the JFK presidency. His election campaign was troubled by the fact that he was a Catholic. People were judging him solely on that fact! As stated in Macklemore’s song “Same Love” a verse comes up saying “A world so hateful some would rather die than be who they are” is exactly how I think our society treats people who don't hold the same beliefs. I believe that each individual is unique and special in their own way. Instead of showing hatred and disgrace towards others, we should embrace the fact that everyone is different. You’re an individual and God created everyone to be different. To be judged upon first impressions is upsetting. I know this from past experiences. To be bullied by students is a horrible thing, but to hear these harsh words from a teacher is even more upsetting. They’re supposed to be the role models, right? This teacher would constantly mark me absent, which worried my mom and caused her to contact the school for explanation. Because this teacher didn't like me, she accused me of being raised wrong by a divorced mother. Because she didn't like my sister who preceded me in school, I was also accused of being difficult. My sister was tougher than me and would speak her mind to the teacher regarding these accusations which caused a conflict. I stood in shock not knowing how to respond to the teachers rants. When my mom demanded a conference with the teacher and the administrators of SHS, the teacher denied everything. My mom was shocked at how spineless the teacher became when her superiors were called in. She had preconceived notions and that caused me many problems. I want people to know me for who I really am.
