Fiona Harris-Glenville UWI Open Campus FOUN 1101 - Caribbean Civilization 19 February 2014 Think piece: A Critical analysis of the song “Single Forever” by Kris Veeshal Persad (KI) When I first listened to the song “Single Forever”, what caught my attention was the rhythm. It started off with a catchy tempo that is typical of Caribbean Soca music. Soca is an originality of the Caribbean culture, which depicts a variety of styles of music and is an encouragement to persons to get up and dance. The song is also written in West Indian slang, which reminds me of the richness of our Caribbean culture. The dialect and mixture of words speaks of a unique history that is special to Caribbean people. The song was written by Trinidad and Tobago soca artiste, Kris Veeshal Persad better known as KI. With this song he won the 2012 Chutney Soca Monarch competition and created a hit that will remain with us for many years (Bruzal & Persad, 2012). His accomplishment serves as a promotion of Caribbean culture and an encouragement to young people, stating that they can achieve greatness no matter their life’s situation. The artist came from a close knit family and frequently speaks of the love and support he received from his parents and that love have helped bring him thus far (Bruzal & Persad, 2012). This is a clear example of the necessity of good parenting. The love and support that parents give to their children is a strong determinant in the path that they take. Persad has demonstrated that quite vividly. In stark contrast to the type of family structure that Persad was raised with, he gives a typical representation of what is happening in our Caribbean society today, by use of the lyrics used in his song “Single Forever”.
