Spanning over three days on the third weekend of May, Sanja Matsuri is a festival in Japan which attracts nearly 2 million people to observe and participate in this celebration. The festival occurs at a shrine in Asakusa and is held in honor of three men who together, established and founded the Sensouji temple located in Asakusa, Taito, Tokyo, Japan. Over the course of the festival, there is a parade consisting of hundreds of mikoshi (portable shrines), display of traditional music and dance, and of course a lot of good food. Although the events that comprise the festival look just like entertainment, there is significance behind it all.
