Camilla Dons Dons 1 Theodor Geisel Trying and not succeeding is not failure; it is part of the process of discovering what works. Theodor Geisel, born on March 2, 1903, was born and raised in Massachusetts. He had a sister named Marnie who, just like Geisel, was made fun of for their parents participation in the pro-American campaign of WW1 (“Dr.”). Their father and grandfather were brewmasters and had a large financial success. Their father’s family were also German-immigrants (“Dr.”). By the time Theodor Geisel was six years old, he was an adept reader. Geisel drank up the words of books by many authors (Timeline). In 1967 Geisel’s wife, Helen Palmer, dies after forty years together. By this point in Geisel’s life, he has written many books, served in World War I,and changed his penname to Dr. Seuss (Timeline). One year later, he married Audrey Stone Dimond, a life long friend of his and his former wife’s (Timeline). After they married, Audrey and Theodor Geisel traveled to many places all around the world (Schulman p. 6). March 2, 1981 is declared Dr. Seuss Day in honor to Theodor Geisel and all his published works. Dr. Seuss wrote forty-seven books and all sold more than 200 million copies altogether. (Ford p. 98). Dedicated to him, were many museum exhibits, art shows, amusement park rides, movies, and television shows (Timeline). Geisel was, and still is, remembered for his books about fairness, discrimination, peace, the environment, consumerism, and humanity (Schulman p.7). Dr. Theodor “Seuss” Geisel died on September 24, 1991. Seventeen years after his death, he was inducted into the California Hall of Fame. His wife took the honor on his behalf (Timeline). Every year on Dr. Seuss’ birthday, the members of Kappa Kappa Gamma, of Whitman College in Washington, host the Annual Dr. Seuss Day festival (Diaz). Over 300 people show up every year for this huge festival, and even if they do not go, Dr. Seuss Day is still celebrated all over America
