Theme Study Essay My theme study report this year shows the theme, Love and Relationships, in numerous texts such as ‘Once Were Warriors’ directed by Lee Tamahori, ‘Precious’ written by Sapphire, ‘Othello’ directed by Oliver Parker, ‘Revenge’ a current affairs interview by 60 minutes, ‘Emily Longley’ a current affairs interview by 60 minutes, ‘Noughts and Crosses’ written by Malorie Blackman, ‘Finding Casey’ written by Jo-Ann Mapson and ‘In the Rubbish Tin’ a short story by Apirana Taylor. Each of these texts shows that people around the world have different relationships with one another; whether they are positive or negative. All of these texts I have researched show different forms of love and relationships. I have studied the theme in all the texts and the similarities and differences they have with each other. A key similarity in both “Once Were Warriors” and “In the rubbish tin” is the parent/child and alcohol abuse between various characters in the film (Once were Warriors) and the short story (In the Rubbish Tin). In “Once were Warriors” Jake savagely beats Beth with his fists to a pulp in front of their friends; to the extent of her having two black eyes and a swollen face. He has a habit of showing his love for her with his fists; as it is the only way he knows how to express his love. The family environment isn’t friendly or safe what so ever. Jake beats Beth because he knows he has the physical strength over her. His nickname is ‘Jake the muss’, because he has the force and power to beat anyone up. He’s strong and doesn’t care who he ends up bashing. Whether it is a guy at the local pub or Beth. “In the Rubbish Tin” Rolf (Phillipa’s dad) has an aching power in his fists, hence, that he sometimes cannot control it.
