Racial Prejudice Racial Prejudice is a dilemma in the novel To kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Maycomb is an old town as it is explained by Scout in the beginning of the novel “Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it” (Lee 6). The town of Maycomb had been there for generations and for as long as the town was there blacks had been treated as the worst kind of people. People in Maycomb create prejudice against others based on their own values and traditions which have been in Maycomb for a long time which is meant by “old town”. Calpurnia takes them to her church. At their arrival everyone opens a way for them in the crowd to pass and treat them respectfully as higher then themselves even though they are just kids. Everyone shows respect except for Lula a big black woman who feels offended by their presence in her church she says “You ain’t got no business bringin’ white chillum here-they got their church, we got our’n. It is our church, ain’t it, miss Cal?” (Lee 158). Lula was indignant that whites could attend her church but she could not attend whites’ church. Whites had treated blacks as inferiors. And because of this prejudice blacks had to live outside of town where they would not cause any trouble. The separation showed that whites wanted nothing to do with blacks. The fact that blacks had to live outside of town showed that they were seen as a lower class. “Negros worship in it on Sundays and white men gamble in it on weekdays” (Lee 157). The quote is referring to First Purchase which is the colored people church. When it says that white men gamble in it, it shows that whites had no respect for blacks. The quote shows that the values of a lower class in this case colored people are also inferior and do not matter. In conclusion racial prejudice plays a g role in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird. Whites discriminate against blacks but blacks also discriminate against whites. This racism is influenced by the characters values, traditions, and beliefs. They form their own opinions based on beliefs which then leads to prejudice. Racism is a big dilemma in the novel and it contributes greatly to the plot. This prejudice helps Scout, Jem, and Dill to see the real world and the bad in it. Over all this racial prejudice is an important theme in the novel which is exhibited by the actions and words of the
