The American Dream is the idea that one is wealthy in all aspects of life including materials and relationships. In order to pursue this dream, one must be able to have a certain image and creating this image may require a manipulation of the truth. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott. Fitzgerald personifies the ideals of the American Dream (and dreams in general) while, at the same time, communicating ideas about the importance of wealth and offering a warning to the reader about the truth concerning one's past and how the manipulation of all three can lead to a tragic end. In The Great Gatsby, the theme about dreams was portrayed vividly through the character Jay Gatsby. Gatsby's character has an unrealistic view of dreams and is foolish enough to let those dreams take control of every aspect of his life. The narrator, Nick Carraway, describes this obsession, saying that "it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men" (2). While Nick does admit that he had a heightened admiration for Gatsby, the childish choices that he made repels Nick and makes him disrespect Gatsby. Scott Fitzgerald offers a unique and creative perspective about dreams, wealth and time and how they were perceived and valued in the 1920's. The book personifies the lack of moral values of society and how that lack can lead to increased greed and obsession. Dreams, though they may seem bold and beautiful, are not reliable and do have an expiration date. In addition, time and wealth are not things to be played with as they can do more harm than good. Finally, Fitzgerald's novel shows the reader how even the most heroic and "great" characters can suffer a tragic and unsettling demise if they are not
