Cynthia Hardy March 7, 2012 Period: 5th Mr. Williams Their Eyes Were Watching God Their Eyes Were Watching God is a novel written by Zora Neal Hurston. This novel is about a girl named Janie who goes through a lot of different things throughout her life time. Janie is a co-dependent and beautiful women who experiences many situations through three marriages. After reading Their Eyes Were Watching God, I have linked my own experiences to those of Janie’s three marriages, which were based upon coming-of-age, protection, money, appearance, love, and freedom. Janie’s first marriage was to Logan Killicks. This marriage was based on protection and coming-of-age. “Yeah, Janie, youse got yo’ womenhood on yuh. So Ah mout ez well tell yuh whut Ah been savin’ up for uh spell. Ah wants to see you married right away” (Hurston 12). Her grandmother, Nanny, felt that it was time for her to grow up and get married. Two people got married, not because they loved each other, but because they were getting old and didn’t want to live alone. Janie’s first marriage to Logan Killicks was based on protection and coming-of-age. “Tain’t Logan Killicks Ah wants you to have, baby, it’s protection” (Hurston 15). Janie did not want to get married to him but Nanny made her because she wanted Janie to be protected. I have a friend whose parents got married because the mom needed someone who will always protect her. The mom’s decision relates to Janie’s because they both made life changing decisions based on their life needs instead of love. Janie’s second marriage was to Joe Starks. This marriage was based upon money and appearance. “…but he bought her the best things the butcher had, like apples and a glass lantern full of candies” (Hurston 34). Joe thought that the more money he had the more Janie would love him. My dad’s best friend is only married to his wife because they own a business
