A World only Lit by Fire The book “A World only Lit by Fire,” by William Manchester, introduces to us, with all the details we need to understand, how life was in the Middle Ages in Europe. The book covers The Dark Ages, the spread of the Roman Catholic Church, Massacres, and Violence against the women, and god’s justice in the Middle Ages. Also, it covers how some brilliant people improved the technology at the time by putting financial and mental effort in the Renaissance era such as Da Vinci. The book is divided into three sections: The Medieval Man, The Shattering, and One Man Alone. In the medieval times people were in darkness. The percentage of the people who were literate was very low. All what people cared about at the time was going through life. In the Renaissance era, people changed. People wanted something from life. They put a lot of effort in studying and inventing new things. They took the Classical era as a model. They felt that they were in darkness and they had to change something. The Middle Ages were focused on religion more than anything else. Everyone was looking for salvation. People tried to be “true Christians.” They killed so many people who believed in different gods. They believed that killing them would “free” them. Also that was one factor why the Filipino friends turned against them. They converted the Filipino women before “mounting” them. In contrast, the Renaissance era, people weren’t really crazy about religion, and people found god less interesting, but they still believed in his existence. But, they were more into using their creative minds to invent new technology, government, philosophy, and art. They realized that there was no new technology being invented in that era so they wanted to make a difference, and they decided to be the other kind of men.
