English 2 Honors 10/29/14 Extended Timed Write #1 (CITR) FINAL Society nowadays is being judged based on gender, age, skin color, sexual orientation, etc. but what people don’t realize is how others comprehend their surroundings and their feelings towards the world. As days go by, the way the world thinks is changing drastically by the way society gets to see new experiences and gets accustomed to the things around them. Although society has its positive views and values, the way others are thinking about how they live is changing the world, where being indecisive is possible because of flaws in something great. The neutrality of society is being conveyed in famous poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poem “The World is a Beautiful Place” by his matter-of-fact tone. The author’s use of word choice and selection of detail portrays how Ferlinghetti is stating the matter-of-fact based on the world’s thinking about their society’s flaws and its influences on people’s lives and how people should might as well enjoy life to the fullest because life won’t last. Ferlinghetti utilizes word choice to suggest that our world has its flaws but can be a great place to live in, thereby illustrating how people should enjoy the world’s joys while it lasts. For instance, the view of him saying that the world is a great place “if you don’t mind a touch of hell” (Line 6). The indication given by the words “don’t mind” illustrates how no one in this world doesn’t really think anymore and we just move on from situations. The words “touch of hell” portray that life will always be filled with some type of negativity and we will have to live with it. The combination between all of these words blend together to create the thought of how no one in this world doesn’t really care about what happens anymore.
