I hid behind the door because I didn't want anyone to see me. When scout got home she was telling Atticus all about Bob attacking Jem and "someone" saving him and taking him home but but the "someone" was someone she had never seen him before. Atticus interrupted "Who saved Jem?" Soon she saw me behind that door and told her dad "why don't you just ask him yourself."
I called my veterinarian (and friend). No answer. The emergency clinic I worked closely with was too far, and time was of the essence. We decided to go to a closer clinic. So, still intoxicated and knowing neither of us should drive, we loaded up the dogs and headed for the ER.
It was the sound of dangling keys and clanging metal. I thought nothing of it because I figured it was my grandpa coming back from work, so I put the covers over my head and tried to go back to sleep. I heard the door open and close and footsteps leading from the door. I took the covers off my head to say goodnight to my grandpa but to my surprise there was no one there. I felt a chill and covered my face with the covers.
June 18th, 1931 I just finished doing a walk with the old dog when I came into the bunkhouse and sat down on my bed. My gut had been hurting and I was just checking to see if any of the boys had a nip of whiskey to clear the ache up. Carlson came strollin’ in just like the big guy he always pretends to be and started complainin’ about how Gus smelled, sayin’ there’s no way he’d be able to sleep with Gus around cause he smelled like an animal that ain’t been washed for forever. That’s when he said it, and I couldn’t barely argue with him. I said I was sorry for how Gus smelled and that I’d try to fix it up, but that didn’t change nothin’.
The next morning Mary Peckham went outside around seven a.m to hang laundry, and she realized that the Moore's house very quiet, and still. She thought that they may have been yet sleeping and she went back to doing her morning chores. Beetween seven and eight a.m she walked on to the Moore's porch and knocked on the door, and there was no answer, no noise, everything was still. She then tried to open the door, but it was locked. She placed a call to Josiahs brother, Ross Moore.
We’re going to be late.” So I slowly drug myself out of bed because I had a restless night. As I put my softball shirt on “Hurry if you want to see Trevor before the games start” my mom said. So I hurried as fast as I could as she chuckled. It was a usual Saturday morning.
She told me Mister Jeffrey became very upset with her and claimed she doesn’t care about his feelings and never has. She told me he wouldn’t even come to sleep in their bed that night. She said that this morning Mister Jeffrey was still angry with her and when she tried to speak to him he wouldn’t even look at her. At this point Miss Hilly was crying again. She told me that finally after a few tries of speaking to him that he just flipped out on her.
Then there is my son that I look into his beautiful green hazel eyes that help me keep going. My wife usually wakes up when I wake up for work, she wakes up to get her day started if we have time we eat breakfast. Usually I make a coffe for myself through out the day, I make her a cup of decaff tea. My work schedule can be hectic because sometimes we have to work through breakfast and lunch then get off really late, especially right now we’re getting supplies ready for future training in the upcoming months. Everything has to be perfect that’s the only way we get to get home early.
My room was the biggest and had the least windows so that’s where everyone pilled up. We tried counting sheep, didn’t work. We tried telling bedtime stories, didn’t work. None of that could outdo the sounds this hurricane was creating. Us kids found it somewhat entertaining, but Aunt Faye was scared to death.
Sorry, I fell to sleep. I was awoken by a harsh, blinding, flash light running under my door. The urge to pee was so strong; I slid my legs out of the bed, all is eerily quiet on the wing. It wasn’t pee my waters had burst, like the Hoover Dam. I screamed but no one came.
