LITERATURE REVIEW During the last 20 years, organizations have started to realise the importance of managing people. Thus, Human Resource Management rose and the term of HRM became popular and started to take place of ‘personnel management’ or ‘labour relations’(Tom Redman and Adrian Wilkinson, p.3). So what exactly is HRM? Many people find it difficult to explain because HRM contains lots of things: recruitment and selection, pay and reward, training and development, performance appraisal, downsizing and outsourcing, etc. According to Storey, Human Resource Management is a way to deploy employees strategically in order to maximize the interest of the organisation (Storey, 1995). Boxall and Purcell come up with a broader definition of HRM; they argue that HRM has everything to do with the employee relationships management in the organisation (Boxall and Purcell, 2000). In other words, HRM is so significant to organisations. In this paper, we are going to focus on the importance of one aspect of HRM: training and development. And through case study and analysis, we are going to study the secret of how organisations develop themselves through proper training. This paper is going to be divided into three parts. The first part will present theories and ideas associated with training and development. The second part will introduce two cases on how the two companies train their employees and the results of their training. The third part will show our analysis of the Training and Development through comparing and contrasting the two cases and come to a natural conclusion of the value of training and development to organisations.
