Liwanag (recitation instructor), Summer 2011 The Use of Human Chi to Prevent Physical Damage When in Combat Thesis Problem: Can the cultivation and manipulation of Human Chi prevent physical damage when engaging in combat? Thesis Statement: The West has gradually accepted the eastern belief that utilizing human chi, the life force inherent to all human beings, through meditation and Chi Kung, can lessen physical stress accumulated in a fight, resulting on a the prevention of damage on the body. I. For thousands of years, the Chinese have researched inter-relationships of all things in nature which they have discovered to be Chi. a. Chi is the natural energy that is inherent to the universe. b. The Chinese have classified it into three categories, namely, the Heaven chi, the Earth Chi and the Human Chi. 1. The Heaven Chi or Tian Chi is made up of the forces which the heavenly bodies exert on the earth. 2. Under the influence of the Heaven Chi is the Earth Chi, which is believed to be made up of lines and patterns of energy. 3. Under the influence of both Heaven and Earth Chi is the Human Chi, which consists of the forces that exist within all human beings. II. There are two ways to cultivate one’s Human Chi and these are through meditation and Chi Kung. A. Meditation refers to techniques used to train the mind of a person in order to increase the concentration, focus and self-awareness of that individual. B.
