Overall, “McCarthyism” did nothing but hurt the United States. It made the government act like a paranoid schizophrenic for years to come, and ended up wasting time, energy, and effort by the American people that could have been used in some other area of war. McCarthy wasted time with “—the social reforms that were never adopted, the diplomatic initiatives that were not pursued, the workers who were not organized into unions, the books that were not written, and the movies that were never filmed (Schrecker,
Jason Campanile 4/8/11 Hist 400w Analytical Book Review Book Review of Resisting McCarthyism: To Sign or Not to Sign California’s Loyalty Oath McCarthyism in America included an era of suspicion, distrust and betrayal. During no other time period in the 20th century has so many of the basic democratic values of America been under threat. Many Americans found no hope in trying to stand up to the scrutiny they were put under during this time. With their jobs and careers on the line, most succumbed to the paranoia that forced them to give up their basic constitutional rights. Very few stood up to the McCarthy era’s witch hunts.
Lastly, the executive branch failed to keep Congress informed. They did not brief Congress when they sold the arms to Iran and they completely disregarded laws restricting aid to the contras (Lowenthal, 169). The resulting blowback nearly ruined President Reagan’s efforts for global security. The power struggle between Congress and the President was problematic. It appeared that, even though Congress was supposed to be briefed on covert missions in order to decide if they should fund it or not, the National Security Council walked easily through a loophole in the
Carter's foreign policy was a weird mixture of Nixon's real politik and McGovern's naive idealism. Constant brawls between Secretary of State Cyrus Vance and National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski blocked any attempts to restore confidence in American diplomacy at home and abroad. Although Carter managed to force Egypt and Israel to sign a peace treaty in the last year of his presidency, the Middle East still remained a highly fragile region. Criticized for his indecisiveness while president, citizen Carter reinvented himself as a vigorous human rights fighter. Soon after leaving the White House, he established the Carter Center which played a major role in many humanitarian actions, such as numerous missions to Latin America and Africa.
We gained control after the deaths of over 60,000 of our men were killed in the line of duty. Some view this as a failure because the U.S. gained nothing from the fighting because Korea did not gain any land or resources during the war. Through saving the countries that were on the edge of becoming part of the communist nation, America escalated the tension of total nuclear destruction. The amount of cost the containment was for the United States was not seen as a success because the results were few to none and we gained nothing for
In George Washington’s farewell address to the young nation, he warned the citizens of the emerging two-party system. He feared that the country might be destroyed by, as he called them, “baneful effects of the spirit of party.” He viewed parties as a threat to both national unity and the concept of popular government (Grushoff). Nearly 200 years after Washington’s famous farewell address, his words have never held so true. The two-party system has endured within our country at the distaste of many Americans. Our country is as divided as ever and there is a substantial lack of unity among the political parties and the citizens of the United States.
Today, the United States is involved in a similar situation. The war in the Middle East has caused enormous public debate and anti-war protests within American culture. Because of the lack of support from the American people, the war in the Middle East has fallen far short of successful in the eyes of the public. Despite the fact that both Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden have been killed, the US armed forces still lack the support of the American home front. The United States engaged in war against terrorism because of the attacks on the World Trade Centers on September 11, 2001.
While the Winklevoss twins originated the idea and had begun executing it, they had taken no steps to protect their intellectual property and had no formal arrangement with Zuckerberg. It is likely that they made several missteps that led to the loss of billions of dollars. The first misstep was their assumption that their idea would be protected from theft. Their second misstep was not taking action to protect their idea, which led to the false assumption about Zuckerberg. For his part, Zuckerberg conducted himself with weak moral standing, having stolen a valuable idea and taken steps to register and launch it without stating his position to the Winklevosses.
During the time period of the Articles of Confederation , Congress lacked much power and was never capable of contributing the money to get the United States out of their war debt. On Feburary 27 , 1783 , a delagate from Virginia named Jospeh WJones wrote a letter to George Washington explaining that those serving the army were unable to recieve the justice that they deserve , because Congress' inability to meet their request for bonuses and back-pay , which truly reflected the horrible diposition and debt that the United states' economy was in after the war. Tresury Secretary Alexander Hamilton urged Congress to have the federal government pay off its debts at face value. The national debt swelled to $75 million causing him to put forth the economy crippling excise tax. On March 7 1785 , John Jay wrote instructions for the United States Minister and sent them to Great Britain, In the document , he explained to the
The Articles of Confederation – DBQ The Articles of Confederation failed to provide proper leadership and government to the United States economically, politically, and socially. The Confederation’s lack of control over their states led to disarray and confusion among trade and taxes. There was also an issue convincing state officials to participate in the government as well as settling disputes between the states and even other countries. The Articles of Confederation had problems getting a hold on their economic situation. The nation was quite poor from the Revolution and had loans from the French that it was unable to pay back.
