Kathryn Sonnie Poetry Essay- Final Draft Comp 111 N24 November 13, 2012 Kelly Cherry’s “Alzheimer’s” People who read Kelly Cherry’s Alzheimer can interpret the poem differently because people have different backgrounds. Someone who has been personally affected by a family member who has this disease can understand what Cherry has experienced. Her experience comes from dealing with her father’s fight with Alzheimer’s. But someone who never seen or experienced the devastating effects on a loved one would think that she was disrespecting her father by calling him crazy. The poem is written in a way that describes what her father’s mind is going through starting with what he does not know and ends with things he somewhat remembers but still leaving him a shell of his former self.
He uses the stories in his short story as an example—almost like a template to show his point of the importance of telling a true war story—to show the true depth of the event. He uses his friend’s stories in the field, telling them in 3rd person as if he were right next to the reader listening to them for the very first time. This creates many main characters that each have individual traits that come out in their stories. The one most sympathized with is a character named Bob Kiley, but everyone called him Rat. In his story, he loses his best friend to a booby trap in the mountains of Vietnam.
When David dreams his dream about the city he tells his sister. His sister tells him not to tell anyone and David thought “that’s was good advice, and luckily I had the sense to take it. People in our district had a very sharp eye for the odd, or unusual, so that even my left handiness cause slight disapproval”. Wyndham 5. This quote is important because it shows that people were a little disapproving of David’s left-handedness because it was odd or unusual.
He did not have a choice and therefore he hated everything about serving other than the friend he made and the good times they shared together. Telling stories is what helps him find peace where there was none to be found. “How to Tell a True War Story” evaluates the relationship between war experience, storytelling, and friendship as a soldier’s insight is manipulated by the Vietnam War. Kiley’s reaction to his best friend Lemon’s death results to a strong representation of cruelty and suffering. “War is nasty; war is fun.
Caleb and Maggie didn’t care what they said though and went on to loving each other and secretly meeting up. They enjoyed life together, side by side. Simone used the theme of love and tragedy to convince her audience that even though life is hard sometimes you just have to take the good with the bad and make the best of it. This refers to the quote as well. Its ironic how she almost died and he almost died too but when placed together, side by side, they can overcome
Because it is an accepted practice for an older married woman and a younger man to be friends, Edna’s husband sees nothing strange about this. After a time Edna and Robert grow closer and start to feel for each other in more than just a platonic way. Though she doesn’t act on her growing feeling, this makes Edna reevaluate her life. She realized that she wasn’t happy with the way her life was going. Edna felt as if everyone had control of what she did, except herself.
Most students today know little to nothing about Vietnam thanks to the lack of photographs, as well as coverage. Some of the students Loewen had interviewed did not even know who fought in the war. A student of Loewen’s even wrote that showing the images of Vietnam during the war (specifically of the naked little girl running from the napalm attack) would completely change a student’s view of the war. However, because textbooks choose to leave out these stirring images, students still do not have the right outlook or sufficient knowledge of what happened in
When he returned home, age was only a number. He was forced to grow extremely fast because he was exposed to real life morale dilemmas between right and wrong. O’Brien uses the illustrates symbolism that in the scene with of the baby water buffalo to illustrate misplaced anger. Rat had lost his best friend in Curt Lemon, and wrote a heart felt letter to Lemon’s sister describing the role her brother had played in his life. It was not really a war story at all, it was more of a love story as described by O’Brien.
He states that he cant tell lies, yet he tells his father that he wont carry on with investigation and as soon as Mrs Alexander lets him know that she has some information about his investigation, then he turns straight back too it. He explains that the reason he left her before is because ‘she went inside and he didn’t know what to do’. This shows that although he can be quite clever at times, autism still plays a major part in the chapter. He doesn’t know how to socialise with anyone so he simply walked away without saying goodbye because he doesn’t know the good meaning of manners or social equilibriums. To conclude
Framton brings a letter of introduction to Mrs. Sappleton in order to make her acquaintance. He was going to talk to her about his illness. While he waits for Mrs. Sappleton to appear, her niece, Vera, keeps him company and tells him a story about why a window in the room has been left open. He begins to believe her story and becomes frightened, once these three men appear in a distance from the window his emotions and unconscious desires begin to take control of him as he becomes panicked and runs from the house, this being controlled by his id psyche. From my class note the id is when someone does things without thinking and this is an example of our daydreams or fantasy.
