The truth behind the hijab. Islam is known as a religion concerned with community cohesion and moral boundaries. This religion is based on the Quran which is the last book Allah sent for the guidance of humanity. The Quran is the word of God who specifically addresses to believing women asking them not to show off their adornment, except that which is apparent and draw their veils over their bodies. In order to fulfill God’s request, Muslim women use a hijab, among others, which is a veil that denotes modest dressing and modest behavior. This veil is a characteristic of Muslim community and that is why Muslim women who don’t wear a hijab disgrace community. First of all, women who decide not to wear the hijab are supported by a verse of the Quran. It clearly states that there is no compulsion in religion to use the hijab (Quran 2:256). It just advices women to use the hijab as an act of obedience to God. Secondly, women wearing hijabs become a very visible sign of Islam. While Muslim men can blend easily into any society, Muslim women are often put on the line and forced to defend not only their decision or not to cover their bodies but also their religion. Thirdly, women who use the hijab lose their identity as women because they cannot dress appropriately according to their gender. It is not certain that the hijab frees women from being seen as sexual objects of desire or from being valued for their looks or body shape. Women need to conform to their own stereotypes, not to the ones dictated by the media or fashion or to the ones dictated by religion. Fourthly, before the revelation of the Quran, slaves women very popular in society. A woman who showed her body was submitted by men, considering her a slave.
