The Truman show is a flim that explores the theme of a false world that revolves around one man, Jim Carrey, as Truman Burbank. The director, Peter Weir, explores the real world through the movie. He relates the movie to everyday life which shows the real world is controlled in ways and how media manipulates people’s lives in the everyday society. This is discussed briefly throughout the plot. For example through things such as children’s television shows through groups, popularity, stereotypes and looks, all these things just add up to what the media wants children and teenagers to think they need in their life. The line between life and its representations in the media is arguably the main theme of “The Truman Show”. Truman lives in an artificial world, made in exactly and especially for him this is shown to viewers throughout this plot. Truman is born and amazingly raised there. He knows no other place apart from Seahaven. The people in Truman’s life are all actors with scripts to learn. Truman is spontaneous and funny because he is unaware of the monstrosity of which he is the main character of. The movies director takes the issue of falseness a step further. Truman is lied to cheated, deprived of his ability to make choices, controlled and manipulated by the media or in Truman’s case Christoph. One of the main problematic figures in Truman’s relationships is Truman’s best and childhood friend Marlon. Both of them grew up together, shared secrets, emotions and adventures. Yet Marlon has lied too constantly under the director, Christoph’s, instructions. The false information between Truman and Marlon convinces the viewers that he is not Truman’s true friend. Truman’s true love Sylvia, in the movie was ousted from the show.
