They made life miserable for those accused and did not stop, even when they had had their “fun”. The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, draws obvious parallels between the 1950’s Red Scare and the witch-hunts that took place in Salem of 1692. Miller connects the hysteria brought about through accusations thrown around by both Senator McCarthy and Abigail Williams by emphasizing how much power their groups hold over everyone. During the times of the Salem Witch Trials and the Red Scare, fear ruled those unfortunate enough to be involved in nearly any conflict. Be it fear of witchcraft or communism, the fact is that it swept throughout the early and post-industrial United States.
LIBERTY UNIVERSITY evangelism vision paper A PAPER SUBMITTED TO Dr. homer massey IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COURSE EVAN 525 LIBERTY BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY BY DAVID E. ROBERTS LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA SUNDAY, JULY 4, 2014 Table of Contents Introduction 3 New View of Evangelism 3 My Evangelism Vision 5 My Future in Ministry and Evangelism 7 Conclusion 8 Bibliography 9 Introduction Evangelism doesn’t come easy for me. I get nervous and doubt my ability to fulfill the Lord’s expectation for me. At least that is what I tell myself. Evangelist G.K. Chesterton covered the issue when he wrote “Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it’s been found difficult and not tried.” This statement is a reflection of my evangelical history, I am saddened to admit. Although I am certain of God’s calling for my life, discerning His specific mission for me is am intimidating task.
The question posed for the assignment asked students to reflect on the question, “Why God?” Specifically, the question is related to the general understanding of the biblical God and how God is perceived in your personal experience, church, and community. In what way(s) did you resonate with the authors’ research and conclusions? I have come to the conclusion that I am still new to Christianity and learning the various levels in which God plays, as well as those levels in which I react to Him. I researched the book a little more and came across the website by the authors for the book, www.thearda.com. The information was broken a little easier for me to understand and apply.
These times also had many differences. People in the Salem Witch Trials were in the 1600's-a very naive time- while people during the time of McCarthyism lived in the 1950's. Citizens of America in the 1600's were scared of one thing, the devil. The churches wanted to rid their town of anyone who associated with him by being hanged. In the 1950's, however, people were terrified of the red Communists coming to take over their beloved country.
Rachel Morpeth Honors American Lit- 2 Ms. Story December 1, 2009 Reverend Benevolent Reverend Hale is perhaps the most complex and dynamic character in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. At the start of the play Hale is summoned from East Hanover to Salem when fear and rumors of witchcraft have just begun to spread. He is an expert in the demonic arts and is adamant in his belief that he will bring nothing but sanity and righteousness to Salem. However, as the story evolves, Hale finds himself caught up in the mass hysteria that he helped to create. Hale’s purpose, contributions, and conflicts in the play are all much more profound than what may appear on the surface and significantly impose on his one hundred eighty degree character spin.
It became a crime to do witchcraft, so then witch hunts began and people started to die because of accusations of witchcraft. Wicca was an earth based religion that celebrated the earth and all living things. Wiccans believed that all things have spirits and that honoring the divine in all life was the most important thing. Most celebrate monthly rituals,
He too was skeptical of organized religion, left wondering what the true Christian religion was. When he was 14, God and Jesus appeared to him in a vision, telling him the Christian faiths were not the true faith. When Smith was 17, an angel appeared to him, telling him the location of golden plates that held the story of ancient Native American Christians. These stories, which he would translate several years later, would then be the foundation for the Book of Mormon. While trying to find a treasure in new York, he met schoolteacher Emma

The people of Salem lived in fear of the devil. Paranoia and fear emerged vigorously when talk of witchcraft spread. With such talk of the devil came accusations. People began accusing their neighbors in order to save themselves. “This predilection for minding other people’s business was time-honored among the people of Salem, and it undoubtedly created many of the suspicions which were to feed the coming madness (Miller 4).” * * Hughes 3 * In The Crucible, there are many factors that contribute to the fall of Salem, Massachusetts.
