Literary Analysis In the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, there are many different characters portrayed as heroes. The two characters that best portrayed it were Macbeth and Banquo. Both characters in this play are somewhat similar and somewhat different. Both Macbeth and Banquo are introduced by the three witches. The three witches give both Macbeth and Banquo three prophecies yet Macbeth and Banquo react differently. Banquo warns Macbeth about the prophecies and tells him that if he chooses to listen to them he will be considered “an instrument of darkness”. “Besides the Thane of Cawdor, but tis strange and oftentimes, to win us to our harm, the instruments of darkness tells us truths, win us with honest trifles to betray ’s in deepest consequence”.(I.ii.122) chooses not to act on it. Banquo is more cautious and he gets suspicious about the witches and their motives. Meanwhile, Macbeth says to himself that murdering Duncan quickly would be best since everything else would be done and over with. “If it were done ‘tis done, then twere well, it were done quickly.”(I.vii.1). Unlike Banquo, Macbeth acts upon his prophecies by planning the murder of King Duncan. He never suspects the witches and that they are setting him up for destruction. Instead, the only thing on his mind is being King. One of the prophecies that were given to Banquo is that he will not be king but he will have descendants who will while Macbeth is just a barren. “Hail Banquo, lesser than Macbeth and greater. Not so happy yet much happier. Thou shalt get kings though thou be none. So all hail Banquo and Macbeth! Macbeth and Banquo, all hail!”(I.iii.65). Macbeth is talking about the witches prophecies that explain how Banquo will have an heir to the throne. “They hailed him father to a line of kings, upon my head they placed a fruitless crown and put a barren scepter in my grip there to be
