Songs of Love and War report This is a concert that I attended on April 4th, 2012. The name of the concert is the Songs of Love and War. It was performed by Dr. Dominick DiOrio and his Chamber Choir. This choir performed many great pieces. The two pieces of music that I enjoyed the most were: Historia de Jepthe by Carissimi and Battle of Jericho by Moses Hogan.
By the 15th century, the Tabor had developed into a Field Drum (Jankins). Also known as a Side Drum It was at this time, that the drum underwent some changes, undergoing a more cylindrical shape as well as increasing in overall size (Jankins). The drum became very prevalent in militaristic purposes. Up until the 16th century Snare Drums were tensioned with wooden laces woven the shells. It wasn’t until the 17th century that people started to develop snare drums with metal screws (Jankins).

A marching band’s music is typically more fast paced and exciting to hear and see, compared to the orchestra’s more monumental and strident sounds. An orchestra’s music is often used in movie soundtracks because of the wide variety of sounds they can produce. A large part of the reason that orchestra has such a wide range in a stylistic sense is because it has a larger variety of instruments. Whereas marching band only has percussion, brass, and woodwinds. Orchestra’s added string sections add more flavor to the equation, being able to generate effects and sounds like plucking and even sometimes singing.
It is one of the most distinct features of the Baroque Era as a whole. Basso continuo denotes musicians who thickened the textures in music of the Baroque era by augmenting the bass line with a combination of chord-producing and bass instruments. They appear in vocal and instrumental ensembles varying from trios to large ensembles. Continuo musicians also assumed an additional function in larger works by helping to keep the performers together. An important element of baroque instrumentation, the combination of a bass instrument (usually from the string family), such as the cello or double bass, paired with a keyboard instrument such as the harpsichord or the organ.
Cultures who used these instrument pairs associated genders with them; the "father" was the bigger or more energetic instrument, while the "mother" was the smaller or duller instrument. Musical instruments existed in this form for thousands of years before patterns of three or more tones would evolve in the form of the earliest xylophone. [24] Xylophones originated in the mainland and archipelago of Southeast Asia, eventually spreading to Africa, the Americas, and Europe. [25] Along with xylophones, which ranged from simple sets of three "leg bars" to carefully tuned sets of parallel bars, various cultures developed instruments such as the ground harp, ground zither, musical bow, and jaw
In the early 1700s, a new modification to a classic favorite, the harpsichord, changed the world of music across all genres. In 1709 a new instrument, classy and sophisticated, yet loud and dynamic was brought into the world by Bartolomeo Cristofori. The piano has continued a well loved legacy of many instruments predating it, while changing its mechanics significantly. The mechanics of the piano consist of three main components. They are: a stretched string made from high-carbon steel, a keyboard, and a blow.
He started his career when he was hired by the Esterhazy family, giving him the chance to write and compose symphonies and conduct orchestras. Also known as the Father of the Symphony or String Quartet, he invented the idea of sonatas (History Reference Center 1). His best known piece, the Emperor Quartet, was so well written that it was the national anthem of Austria until the end of World War I. without the guidance of the Esterhazy family and the chance to write and compose, Haydn’s career would not have been as influencing. Haydn was an ideal man of the Enlightenment. He had a great sense of humor, and loved playing jokes on his friends.
