“Not a day since then I haven’t whished him dead”-Havisham This is very effective as the aggressive tone shows “Havisham” has been rejected and her love is causing her pain. Similarly in “Valentine” “Carol Ann Duffy” uses a very forceful tone with words like “here” and “take it” which tells us her lover is not being very co-operative and like “Havisham” suggests a degree of pain within there love. The theme of love is taken to a deeper level by “Carol Ann Duffy” when she shows through literary techniques that the pain of love can be dangerous. The theme of love is contrasted by violent metaphors in both poems. “Ropes on the back of my hands I could strangle with”-Havisham This is another example of the pain of love and it is particularly effective as it shows the extreme physical tension within “Havisham” and describes the pain of love as a driving force of murder.
‘To His Coy Mistress’ shows an idea of a sexual and lustful love. This is because the narrator uses words to encourage sexual activity towards a woman. ‘Sonnet 130’ is also based on a true and realistic love. This is shown as the narrator writes about his realistic love between him and his lover. In this time in history, love was shown by a kiss on the cheek or on the hand.
Alternatively, it could mean that their love is so strong that it causes a change to the rhythm of the poem, as it conquers time. “To His Coy Mistress” is similar to this; it’s made up from rhyming couplets like “grow” and “slow” throughout the whole poem, which I think, is because the poem is meant to persuade his lover to sleep with him. The rhyming makes it sound witty and well-constructed; so the woman can understand it more easily and is more likely to want to sleep with him. However, like “Hour”, it contains some half rhyme “lie” with “eternity” and “try” with “virginity”. In this assessment I will be writing about how men show commitment towards women. Despite the differences in how commitment has been portrayed in the poems, there are many themes which link all the poems together, for example the theme of romantic love has been shown throughout the poems Cousin Kate and Valentine and has also been resembled in a circular object which is either a ring or an onion. This circular object could also resemble loop of infinity which could imply that love is infinite. Although the gifts maybe different they both represent commitment the only difference is the structures of the poems and how the author expresses their thoughts on how commitment should be shown. In Christina Rossetti’s poem “Cousin Kate”, there is a theme of commitment.
The use of “...we are, for as long as we are.” (Line 16 and 17) Shows that Duffy is inviting her readers into the poem to help reflect upon how she feels. The formats of these pieces are all varied. Shakespeare firstly has written a play. However, within his play he writes a few sonnets to show the feelings of love between both Romeo and Juliet. One of the famous sonnets in the play is in act 1 scene 5, where Romeo shows his true feelings for Juliet during their first encounter.
Larkin portrays this sense of objectification in his poem with regards to woman as he describes a woman as a ‘bosomy English rose’ and then follows on to call her ‘beautiful’ throughout the poem portraying the sexual lust involved with love. In Larkin’s poem the male would seem he is not bothered about the unfortunate break up between him and the girl he is dating as he avoids mentioning the facts of how their relationship ended and seemed pleased she returned what is believed to be an engagement ring. Abse on the other hand is describing the atmosphere of Valentines day where he does include a sense of sexual desire however he is still hoping to fall in love as he did once before. In the poems “Medusa” and “Les Grands Seigneurs” both of the poems explore gender conflict through love/relationships and they are both written from a woman’s perspective. In “Les Grands Seigneurs” the character was single and she was able to manipulate men and was “their queen”. We can interpret that she controlled the men through lust. In the poem “Medusa” gender conflict through control is also illustrated when she says: “a suspicion, a doubt, a jealousy”.
Olds suggests in this poem that “True Love’’ is all about two people having passion, oneness, and comfort with each other. These three things in a marriage or relationship create true love. Also, she tries to show that without true love, sex is no good. From the beginning of the poem, the speaker talks about the passion between her and her husband. She expresses that their love making is very intense and passionate.
The romantic love of Romeo and Juliet has become very popular and is the ideal example of star-crossed lovers. The love of family honor is what keeps these lovers apart: the feud between the Capulets and Montagues.
