It's well-known that Nathaniel Hawthorne is an American writer of fiction. Hawthorne's unique gift was for the creation of strongly symbolic stories which touch the depest roots of man's moral nature. His work, The Scarlet Letter, is also acknowledged in the world and is fomous for the symbolism skills in the novel. Meanwhile, the symbolics are changinging with different characters and different time. Among them, the scarlet letter "A" plays an important role. It's mysterious and through the novel. and the paper shows my opinions on the symbolism of the scarlet letter "A". In the town, during this time, religions and law were considered to be the same. A small crime was considered to be as terrible as the worst of crime, and criminals were punished strictly. For example, a child will be beaten in the town square as a punishment for being ungrateful to his parents. The punishment to Hester Prynne for adultery is the scarlet letter "A" on the front of her dress after seven years prison life. Therefore,at first, the scarlet letter "A" symbolizes "adultery" here and means AD which is short for Arthur Dimmesdale, who is Hester's lover. With the development of plot,the scarlet letter"A" represents "amazon". Because she faces the jury of church, showing her bravery and independence to the women who were away from her and the society. The scarlet letter "A" was artistically done in fine red cloth surrounded by rich gold thread. After hester got freedom, she has enough time to make diversified and beautiful "A" for different classes. A long time later, The scarlet letter "A" becomes a kind of fashionable decorates instead of shame. Therefore, scarlet letter "A" is a kind of art. Hester Prynne accepts the abandon of people and does the poor favour all the time. Although others' attitude is changing and willing to accept her, she's still herself
