Jose Ortiz Period: 2 10/12/11 Essay #1 Madame Meursault, Meursault’s mother is a character in the book The Stranger. She isn’t alive during the time the book takes place, but you can see that the author, Camus, describes the relationships she had with the other characters throughout the book. The author leaves readers under the impression that Madame Meursault had a good relationship with Meursault, Mr. Perez and even the other people at the retirement home she was put in by Meursault 3 years before her death. Camus gives the readers the impression that Meursault was on rather good terms with his mother prior to her death. It wasn’t a perfect relationship that they shared, but Camus explained what Meursault had learned through his mother. For an example they shared many of the same attitudes about life, including a love of nature and the capacity to become accustomed to virtually any situation. Meursault may had never grieved over her death but he often could relate to her. He believed his mother must have embraced a meaningless universe and lived for the moment, just as he did. Another relationship that Madam Meursault has is the one with Thomas Perez and the people at the home. Mr. Perez was one of the elderly residents at the old persons’ home where Meursault’s mother lived. Before her death, Madame Meursault had a known relationship with Mr. Perez at the home. They become so inseparable that the other residents joked that he was her fiancé. This relationship with Mr. Perez shows that Madame Meursault had some kind of love in her life at the home and therefore had a good relationship with Mr. Perez.
